How to Replace an Electrical Panel
If you find that you need to replace the electrical panel in your home, then you can decide to call an electrical handyman can do all these very quickly for you, or you may choose to try and change your own electrical panel. While there may be a little difficult at first, in fact, not too difficult, and as long as you have some basic home improvement skills, you should be able to manage to do this easily. If you need to change your electrical panel with a larger, can also be done, as long as you can have the power turned off. You may also find that you will get your job done faster and easier to do alone.

Step 1 – Stop the Power off
Before you try to make changes in the electrical panel, you will need to ensure that full power is turned off. You will also need to obtain permission from your local building authorities. This should not be a problem, but you may need to have the building inspector about the end of the project. Call your electricity provider, and ask them to turn off the power. Use a voltmeter to check that the power is completely off before you start. If the power is off, then some will live cable, which can give a serious electrical shock.
Step 2 – Securing Wires
You will need to ensure that you secure the cables that go to and from your electrical panel. Make sure that each wire is labeled and that you mark where they go so you can quickly replace them after you have installed a new power panel. Each connection circuit will have up to three different wires: live wires, which would have isolated the black (sometimes red), neutral wire, which consists of white insulation, and grounding cables, which can be bare copper or have a green insulation.
Step 3 – Removing Breakers
After the cable is missing, take all the breakers of the panel. This can often be eliminated simply by pressing on the metal side panel. You then can take the cable grounded, connected to a breaker bar. You also may have a neutral wire connected to a different bar. Remove the panel.
Step 4 – Adding a New Panel
You can now add a new panel. Use a screwdriver to screw the panel to the wall. Add wires to various bars, and then add the cut. Use your pliers to pull the cable back through the panel, using your label to refer to a different connection. You will then be able to change the strength back and check your electrical panel using your voltmeter.
