There are certain types of plants that just scream to be basket plants. They look better in a nice basket. They grow better in them. They are lusher, fuller and healthier in the basket. But, don’t limit yourself to just one or two types of plants. If you have a small area or you live in a pied-à-terre, high above the city streets, you can still grow plants in baskets, plants of virtually every kind imaginable.
Ferns grow well in baskets but so do others. In fact, you can grow food bearing plants in hanging baskets, adding in fragrant herbs so that your kitchen can be filled with the delicious fruits of your labors. Strawberries look gorgeous spilling over the side of the basket, dainty white flowers in the spring giving way to juicy red berries in the summer. And, you can grow virtually any other plant that way.
Basket Plants Adjustment
Because the basket plants is so much smaller than a garden, you do have to make some adjustments so that your plants will grow healthy and strong. You have to make sure that they are getting enough nutrients to get big but not so much that they are burned by too much fertilizer. You also have to keep track of the watering schedule for your plant as well. You also have to make sure that you are checking the roots to be sure that the plant is not becoming root bound which can stunt its growth or even kill it.
In addition to choosing the right plants for your basket plants, it is important to choose the right basket plants as well. Small, plastic baskets are lightweight and can be hung virtually anywhere and typically can look good with any plant. Other types of baskets may not provide enough drainage or may hold in far too much heat. If you have a wooden basket, you can change its color to match the mood, the occasion or to blend in with your home’s exterior.
Weight of Basket Plants
Once you have the plant in the basket, you have to be aware of its total weight. It can be a very heavy item, so make sure that you are hanging it properly and securely. You might also consider hanging them on chains or other methods so that you can lower them for watering or to tend to the plants and then raise them back up. If you do have them on a chain, you should remove the plants in very high winds and inclement weather. Kept tended, many different basket plants will live year round, giving you their beauty and their healthful oxygen.
